Can You Get Waxed While on Your Period? Everything You Need to Know.

Your Period Has Arrived... But You Have a Waxing Appointment!

We've all been there.

You've booked your waxing appointment, you've been looking forward to getting everything smooth and tidy... and then your period decides to make an appearance.

So, do you need to cancel?

No!

Being on your period doesn't automatically mean you can't have a wax. In fact, you can have most waxing treatments as normal while you're menstruating.

There are just a few things you might want to know – particularly if you're having a bikini or intimate wax.

Can I Have a Wax While I'm on My Period?

Yes!

There is no general health reason why you can't have a wax while you're on your period.

If you're having your legs, arms, face or underarms waxed, your period shouldn't make any difference to the treatment at all.

If you're having a bikini or intimate wax, you'll need to use an internal period product such as a tampon or menstrual cup during the treatment.

And if you're thinking, "But won't my waxing therapist be horrified?"

Absolutely not!

Periods are a completely normal part of life and, when you work in waxing, you see pretty much everything. There is no need to feel embarrassed.

Might Waxing Feel More Sensitive During Your Period?

This is the one thing you may notice.

Some women find that their skin feels more sensitive around the time of their period. That can make waxing feel a little more uncomfortable than it would at other times in your cycle.

This doesn't happen to everyone, though.

Some clients notice no difference whatsoever, while others find that certain areas are a little more sensitive.

If you're someone who knows that you become particularly sensitive just before or during your period, you may prefer to book your wax for another time if you have the flexibility.

But if your period has arrived unexpectedly?

Don't panic and don't automatically cancel!

What About an Intimate Wax?

This is probably the question we get asked most often.Yes, you can have a bikini or intimate wax while you're on your period. You'll just need to wear a tampon or menstrual cup for the treatment.

The period itself isn't a problem. We can work around it just as we would any other normal bodily function, and honestly, we really aren't bothered!

You don't need to apologise, explain yourself or feel embarrassed if you're on your period when you arrive for your appointment.

If you're having an intimate wax, a sanitary pad isn't suitable during the treatment because the area needs to be clean and accessible, so if you don't normally use tampons or a menstrual cup, you may prefer to reschedule your intimate wax.

Never feel pressured into using a period product you're not comfortable with just to keep a waxing appointment.

Your comfort comes first.

What If My Period Is Very Heavy?

If you're having a heavy period and you're worried about leaks or simply don't feel comfortable, it's completely fine to reschedule. There's no prize for coming to your appointment when you're feeling miserable!

If you're comfortable using a tampon or menstrual cup and feel well enough for your appointment, there's no reason you can't go ahead. For an intimate wax, you may want to use a fresh tampon or menstrual cup immediately before your appointment.

If you're using a tampon, remember to follow the manufacturer's guidance and don't leave it in longer than recommended.

Will My Waxer Know I'm on My Period?

Yes!

But we're not sitting there worrying whether you've got your period or not.

If you're having an intimate wax, we'll know you're wearing a tampon, but that's about it.

And if there is a little blood, don't worry. Periods are normal. Bodies are normal. Vaginas are normal.

It's not unusual and it's certainly not something to be embarrassed about.

We work with towels and protective coverings, and everything is cleaned thoroughly between clients.

You don't have to announce it the moment you walk through the door, but if you're having an intimate wax and you're on your period, it's helpful to mention it when you arrive so that we know and can make sure you're comfortable.

And if you're feeling more sensitive than usual, let us know.

Communication really does make waxing easier.

Should I Book My Wax Around My Period?

If your periods are predictable, you might find that you prefer to book your waxing appointments at a time when you're not menstruating. This isn't because waxing during your period is unsafe – it's simply because you may find it more comfortable.

If you're particularly sensitive during the days immediately before or during your period, choosing another time in your cycle could make the experience more comfortable.

But periods aren't always predictable! If your period arrives the day before your appointment, don't assume you have to cancel.

If you're really suffering with cramps, listen to your body.

If you're feeling perfectly fine apart from your period, there's no reason you can't come for your wax, but if you're curled up with cramps, feeling exhausted, bloated or generally miserable, you might decide that lying on a waxing bed isn't quite what you need that day.

And that's OK too!

Your waxing appointment can wait.

Can I Take Pain Relief Before My Wax?

If you normally take an over-the-counter painkiller for period pain and it's suitable for you, you can follow your usual routine.

However, don't take medication specifically for waxing without checking that it's appropriate for you.

And remember that some people find caffeine can make them feel more sensitive before waxing, so you might want to skip the giant coffee immediately before your appointment if you're already feeling a little tender!
