How to Prepare for Your Waxing Appointment

A Few Simple Things Can Make a Big Difference

Whether you've been waxing for years or you're booking your first appointment, preparing your skin properly can help your wax go more smoothly and leave you with better results.

The good news is, you don't need a complicated pre-wax routine! If this is your first ever wax and you're wondering what actually happens during the appointment, take a look at our Waxing 101: What to Expect at Your First Appointment article.

Here's what you need to know.

Don't Shave Before Your Wax!

This might sound obvious, but it bears repeating! Wax needs enough hair to grip, so ideally you'll want an absolute minimum of 5mm of growth – roughly the length of a grain of rice.

If you've shaved recently, give it time to grow back before your appointment. If the hair is too short it's more painful for you, and more difficult for us!

If you're worried that your hair is too long, don't reach for the scissors or trimmers. Longer hair is much easier for us to deal with than hair that's too short, and we can trim it if necessary.

Exfoliate Before Your Wax

Gently exfoliating a day or two before your appointment can help remove dead skin cells and free hairs that might otherwise become trapped beneath the skin, but keep it gentle – you don't need to scrub yourself as though you're trying to remove paint! A body scrub, exfoliating mitt or washcloth is plenty.

Don't exfoliate on the day of your wax, as freshly exfoliated skin can be more sensitive.

Keep Your Skin Clean and Product Free

On the day of your appointment, the area being waxed should be clean, dry and free from products. Avoid:🧴 Moisturiser🛢️ Body oils🌸 Heavily fragranced products

And if you're having your underarms waxed, skip the deodorant on the area.

A normal shower before your appointment is absolutely fine – just don't moisturise afterwards.

Be Careful With Your Skincare

If you're having your face waxed, tell your therapist about any active skincare products you're using. Ingredients such as retinol, prescription retinoids and strong exfoliating acids can make skin more sensitive and more susceptible to irritation during waxing.

If you're unsure whether a product you're using matters, ask before your appointment.

Sunburn and waxing don't mix!

Waxing can irritate already sun-damaged skin, so don't wax an area that is sunburned or particularly sensitive after being in the sun or using a sunbed.

If you've recently been on holiday, give your skin time to recover before booking your wax.

What Should You Wear?

Think loose and comfortable, particularly after a bikini, intimate or leg wax.

Freshly waxed skin can be more sensitive, so tight clothing rubbing against it isn't ideal.

And if you're having a full leg wax, perhaps don't plan on squeezing yourself straight into your tightest jeans afterwards!

What About Your Period?

Your period doesn't automatically mean you need to cancel.

For most waxing treatments, it makes no difference at all.

If you're having a bikini or intimate wax, you can still have your treatment while menstruating, provided you're comfortable using a tampon or menstrual cup.

Some people find their skin is more sensitive around their period, while others notice no difference.

On the Day of Your Wax

Keep it simple:

✨ Have a normal shower.

✨ Make sure the area is clean and dry.

✨ Don't shave.

✨ Don't exfoliate.

✨ Don't apply moisturiser or oil to the area.

✨ Avoid vigorous exercise immediately beforehand.

✨ Wear something comfortable.

✨ Tell us about any skincare products that might affect your treatment.

And that's it!

Don't overthink it. You don't need to spend hours preparing for a waxing appointment.

Let the hair grow, look after your skin and leave the rest to us.
